Does a travel router need its own data plan?
No. A travel router shares and secures an internet connection that already exists — hotel Wi-Fi, a coffee shop network, or a phone tethered over USB. It does not have a SIM slot and cannot create cellular data on its own.
Why would I use a travel router instead of just connecting each device to hotel Wi-Fi directly?
Two reasons: many hotel networks only allow one device per login, and a travel router lets every device you own connect to its own private network instead. It can also run a VPN for every connected device without installing VPN software on each one separately.
