Is wireless not really safe anymore?

Nowadays, with the emergence of wireless internet, a lot of services which support this wireless technology have surfaced. One of them is the Novatel’s MiFi Mobile Hotspot, sold by Verizon Wireless and Sprint, and they call it the MiFi 2200.

This type of wireless service enables you to fully access the internet, anytime and anywhere, making it practical and easy to access. But, this connection offered by Novatel, makes your device also prone to outside hazards.

By using wireless technology you may experience multiple security vulnerabilities. MiFi doesn’t require a valid session to changes to its configuration settings. By visiting an unsecured website, you may unknowingly activate your GPS system. The web interface couldn’t protect against Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) which could enable a website to change your mi-fi settings. Data can be improperly encoded, just like the key field for the Wi-Fi settings which exposes the clear text of the field.

Unprotected Wi-Fi use can change the wireless settings of your MiFi, which terminates your internet connection, forcing you to reset your device back to factory settings. There have been discoveries in some gaping holes in the web interface for this mobile hotspot that can be exploited for unwanted purposes.

What’s more than 5 at a time? It’s 16 clients in one connection with myPocket 3G mobile router

Mi-fi was able to surprise us when it was able to set up a brand new networking system by being able to connect five Wi-Fi-able devices in one simultaneous connection. However, what would you get by being able to connect to Wi-Fi up to sixteen clients in a single session? You get the myPocket 3G mobile router.

What exactly is this? We may ask, well, it’s only D-Link’s latest magic trick. This little devil has finally cleared FCC and comes off as unique on its own without even being compared to Novatel’s MiFi.

By checking out the user manual, the myPocket 3G is able to support 850/1900MHz HSPA 7.2Mbps. A real sweet deal when it comes to the US market. It doesn’t matter whether you have a limited bandwidth or using various mobile networks when connecting with clients, it’s the flexibility which matters here. With D-Link’s myPocket 3G mobile router you can still use the same functions on your mobile which uses the cellular network.

Familiar services like the SMS, contacts functionality, firewall, DMZ and port forwarding are very much available, only with the absence of there’s no microSD card slot for turning the portable router into a mini NAS.

US Still Leads More Wi-Fi Hotspots Access Points Than Europe

Insurmountable unexpected consequences might hit you upon leaving your Wi-Fi unprotected. It may range from petty glitches on your own system down to the vast destruction to even a large population and coverage such as a nation.

Alarmingly, United States of America tops the list of countries and territories with unsecured Wi-Fi connections. There are a total of forty percent of all access points in the United States that are open and unsecured. WeFi laid out a factsheet that in Europe, there are only twenty-five percent of hotspots that are open. This number is comparably low as to the percentage that of the US.  On the other hand, France has a relatively large number of open access points with captive portals. It is quite an interesting fact to know that these captive portals were utilized into different access points in order to moderate the wide open availability of connection for diverse users. These can aid in monitoring access and preventing exploitation to a certain degree.

As estimated by WeFi, there are almost 1/3 unprotected access points of the all the spots of Wi-Fi in the world.
