T-Mobile HotSpot @Home

T-Mobile is launching a new plan, T-Mobile HotSpot @Home, where users receive unlimited nationwide calling while at their house. The new service utilizes a Wi-Fi router to provide users the choice of using one phone for both their mobile and home telephone calls. T-Mobile officials say the service is timely as more people are looking to drop their home landlines in hopes of saving money

Internode releases battery-powered 3G “MiFi” router

Internode releases battery-powered 3G "MiFi" router

The MiFi router doesn't need to have so much as a power-point or USB port in sight, either -- it's a battery-powered router roughly as big as a pack of cards that has enough juice to give you four hours of WiFi.

MiFi is similar to the Huawei E5832 battery-powered router released recently by Virgin Mobile, but is manufactured by Novatel Wireless, a San Diego-based company, rather than the China-based Huawei.

It allows up to five devices to share the one 3G connection, such as notebooks, netbooks, PDAs, smartphones and gaming systems. It's particularly interesting for people who have long hankered for an "internet-connected iPod Touch" but don't want to buy into the iPhone with its associated voice plans and long term contracts. Now, with a MiFi stashed away in your backpack, you can have your iPod-touch connected to 3G -- along with your laptop and any other WiFi devices you might carry with you.

Internally, the MiFi runs Linux, but is a fully self-contained system which doesn't require you to install any drivers on the devices you want to use it with, since it just provides a regular WiFi signal, secured via WPA2.

The MiFi simply requires a 3G data-enabled SIM (such as Internode’s NodeMobile Data 3G wireless broadband service, which provides a connection over the Optus mobile network).

As a launch special, Internode is selling the device for 9 (unlocked and with no service contract requirement). The standard price will be 9; with the option of 9 when bundled with a 24-month NodeMobile Data service.

This particular model of MiFi being sold by Internode is good for use on Optus or Vodafone, as it supports 3G at 900/1900/2100MHz, but no good for connecting to Telstra Next G as it does not support the required 850MHz frequency used by Telstra (for that, you'd need to get the MiFi 2372, which is not being sold by Internode but does support Telstra's 850MHz frequency).

Internode product manager Jim Kellett said MiFi has broader appeal than just mobile business applications and iPod Touch-toting “road warriors”: it delivers an instant NodeMobile-powered broadband service for the home or a holiday house - with no setup. MiFi can be placed where 3G reception is strongest, using its wireless network to connect devices locally.

MiFi has a 10-metre coverage range for its wireless network, and comes with an Australian power supply (one big advantage over the direct-imported models) and a USB cable for charging from a computer.

It also has a MicroSDHC memory card slot, providing shared storage of up to 16GB for all the devices connected to the router.
