Nomad Innovations, KPTV, KLAS-TV, and Clearwire Showcase Use of First 4G Broadcast News Camera System at NAB 2010
Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) April 14, 2010
Nomad Innovations is showcasing at the 2010 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show its LiveEdge solution for live news content gathering and delivery. Working cooperatively with KPTV (Portland), KLAS-TV (Las Vegas) and Clearwire, Nomad is showcasing the LiveEdge 4G broadband solution over the Clearwire 4G network in Las Vegas.
The 1.5 pound LiveEdge unit attaches to news cameras and enables live coverage for broadcast, cable or the web via high-bandwidth wireless and/or wired broadband networks, all without using a live truck or microwave network. www.LiveEdge.tv
LiveEdge enables Broadcasters to aggressively and economically expand their current newsgathering operations globally. KPTV General Manager Patrick McCreery said, "This technology is going to revolutionize the way we do business and will fundamentally change how we collect and distribute live news. This is a more effective and affordable way to 'Go Live' with breaking news as well as a unique and innovative way for us to create new revenue generating services." By utilizing available 4G and 3G networks, the LiveEdge technology will significantly reduce KPTV's and KLAS's operating expenses when compared to their current usage of legacy microwave and satellite technology.
LiveEdge sets up in seconds and requires no engineering support. News crews can be on the air with breaking news in a fraction of the time required for setting up microwave shots. Live events can be covered without deploying production units.
LiveEdge offers news crews a robust two-way audio/video/data connection between the scene of a news story and the studio. LiveEdge provides secure connectivity to iNews, ENPS, non-linear editing and other production systems. A return path provides IFB and Intercom via a Bluetooth interface as well as confidence video or teleprompter.
LiveEdge can transmit video via 3G and 4G networks in NTSC, PAL, SDI and HD formats. Nomad Innovations has 11 patent applications pending for its hardware and software.
Bob Klingle, CEO of Nomad Innovations, said "Built by broadcasters for broadcasters, NAB 2010 is where broadcasters' visions will finally become a reality. Using 4G wireless networks LiveEdge delivers broadcast quality video with extremely low latency, reliability and versatility. LiveEdge has enabled our partners to go live in places that they have not been able to go live from before. As visionaries in their markets, Clearwire, KPTV and KLAS are the perfect partners for us to establish our domestic presence while providing them the opportunity to be the first broadcasters and broadband network in the US to "go live" with our solution."
"The ability of a 4G mobile broadband network to act as a catalyst for new and innovative hardware and software applications that leverage the promise of the mobile Internet is a foundational component of Clearwire's efforts nationwide," said David Maquera, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of Clearwire. "LiveEdge is one of the first to truly grasp the power of an anytime, anywhere mobile broadband solution and develop products that enable users to forge new paths as leaders in their fields."
The Clearwire 4G mobile broadband experience is similar to that provided by Wi-Fi, but without the short-range limitations of a traditional Internet hotspot. Clearwire's 4G network offers service areas measured in miles, not feet with average mobile download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps with bursts over 10 mbps.* The Clearwire 4G network is available in 28 U.S. cities and covers 38 million people nationwide. The LiveEdge trial at the NAB show will use Clearwire's commercial 4G network which launched in Las Vegas in mid-2009.
*Speed claims based on download speeds only. Actual performance may vary and is not guaranteed. CLEAR performance claim is based on average download user speeds achieved during tests performed on the CLEAR commercial network by CLEAR. Other carrier performance based on their advertised claims.
LiveEdge is the flagship product of Nomad Innovations, LLC, which delivers media transmission solutions to customers requiring real-time, two-way broadcast-quality video and audio communications using the latest wireless broadband technologies. Louisville Kentucky-based Nomad Innovations includes executives from the broadband, broadcasting, data networking and information technology industries.

Sidecut Reports Releases Updated WiMax Market Report: Says ‘New’ Clearwire Still Has Opportunity to Change Broadband Market in U.S.
Burlingame, CA (PRWEB) January 28, 2009
Even as it faces economic and operational challenges, the "new" Clearwire Corporation and its WiMax-based wireless broadband technology still has a good window of opportunity to change the landscape for Internet services in the U.S., according to a recently updated report from Sidecut Reports (http://www.sidecutreports.com).
Updated in January 2009 with coverage and analysis of the closing of the Clearwire-Sprint merger and of Clearwire's recent WiMax market launches in Baltimore, Md., and Portland, Ore., the report examines the business case for WiMax services in the United States, and explains why lower deployment costs and a time-to-market advantage still give Clearwire and WiMax a window of opportunity, even in a down or depressed economy.
"Since Clearwire's WiMax service allows users to combine home and mobile Internet access, it could represent a smart choice for consumers or businesses looking to consolidate their broadband budgets," said Paul Kapustka, editor and founder of Sidecut Reports. "The question for Clearwire in 2009 is whether it can execute and deploy in enough markets to gain critical mass before competitors can bring their '4G' offerings to market."
Titled "Game On, WiMax! Why the 'New' Clearwire gives WiMax its best chance at success in the U.S. marketplace," the 34-page report is prepared in an easy-to-read style with deep background material for those who may not have understood WiMax before.
In the updated report you will learn:
The pricing and device strategies for each of Clearwire's two market launches so far, in Baltimore and Portland
How the economic downturn, which forced backers like Intel, Google and Time Warner Cable to take big losses on their Clearwire investments, may slow down Clearwire's market launches
The motivations for Google's 0 million investment, which go beyond business goals for search and mobility to include public-policy goals
Why the big telcos, AT&T and Verizon, are stepping up their competing fourth-generation wireless marketing campaigns, even though WiMax may not compete directly
The report also contains a WiMax technical and historical backgrounder, as well as an updated look at the growing WiMax business opportunities for enterprises, investors and entrepreneurs. The new report is available for immediate download from www.sidecutreports.com for 9.95.
