New Overdive Mobile Hotspot due from Sprint in Feb 2010

News of a new pocket 3G and 4G router has been leaked this week that will be an evolution of the current MiFi branded mobile hotspot from Novatel.  The portable broadband hotspot is slated to be called the Overdrive, and is being made by Sierra Wireless. It will be the first pocket sized broadband router utilizing WiMax to be sold in North America. The device will work by picking up 3G and 4G cellular signals from local wireless providers, and retransmit the signals into local WiFi compatible signals.  The overdrive will support Sprints 4G network with fallback to 3G.

The enhancements over the Novaltel MiFi include a sustained 6 Mps download speed over 4G for five connected users. In addition, the Overdrive will have a build in SD card slot to enable network attached storage (NAS) for everyone connected to the mobile hotspot. It will also have over three times the connection radius of the MiFi's current 30 foot signal radius, about 100 feet. Look for official pricing and availability from Sprint in February 2010.
